If you start asking around, you will find widely scattered opinions of home VOIP service. Some say it is excellent, while others say it just barely works, and every opinion in between those two extremes. The truth of the matter is they are all right. Let me explain.

The vast majority of the time when someone is having a problem with their home VOIP, the problem is really not with the home VOIP system, but the real problem is that their high-speed Internet connection is poor. Yes, that fact has been proven in study after study of home VOIP problems that have been reported. What happens is that many people are expecting way too much from their home Internet connection, and with today's fancy web pages and downloading MP3 songs and movie trailers and whatnot, this is all straining the home high-speed Internet connection to the extreme. Now that is with ONE computer -- can you see how that problem multiplies if you have what is becoming a very typical scenario these days, where Dad is surfing on one computer, Mom is surfing on another, and the two kids are each doing homework on their computer, and THEN you are asking this Internet connection to also support yet another device, your home VOIP system?

First of all, you need to determine what is important to you. Perhaps saving a few hundred dollars per year is not that important to you. I can think of a lot of places that I could put a couple hundred extra dollars, but everybody is different and that may not matter to you.

Now look ... I mean REALLY look at your high-speed Internet connection. The going average price of such a service across the US is around $40-$50 per month. Are you using one of those el cheapo high-speed services that only charges $15 a month? Well, you are getting what you are paying for, and home VOIP service may not be for you. They might look good on the surface, but if that low-end service is preventing you from saving a couple hundred dollars per year, then do the math -- how much is it REALLY costing you, if it is poor enough so that you cannot reliably use home VOIP service on it?
